How to start a sports blog?
1.choose your niche
This is probably the easiest part because you already have it in mind. Write about what is most familiar to you. Do what you love most and find it easy. Restrict your search to a specific sport and sports team in a specific country/competition. The more you refine the topic, the more you connect with other fans and the larger your fan base becomes. You need to keep the niche as narrow and refined as possible to keep your audience interested, allowing you to produce a steady stream of content on a regular basis. Of course, you can also go against the grain and choose sites like : But of course these are huge organizations with huge resources and people creating content every day. Here are some individual/personal blogs with a specific niche: You may want to keep it simple in the beginning of your business and try to emulate their success. With that in mind, most of my tips and advice are for those who want to know how to start a sports blog on a budget.
2. choosing a platform and domain name
There are many options for choosing a blogging platform, but trust me, if you’re new to blogging and looking for the best way to have a successful blog, choose WordPress! Then you need hosting, and I recommend Bluehost. It offers a free domain name and a discount of up to 63% for web hosting. Bluehost manages nearly a million blogs worldwide and automatically installs WordPress for you when you sign up, making it very easy to create your site. The company offers 24/7 customer support via phone, chat and email, as well as a 30-day money-back guarantee . Perfect for beginners like you and (not too long ago) me! Click Get Started on the Bluehost homepage, and you will be redirected to the package options below. I recommend the basic plan because you can always upgrade to a higher plan if your needs require it. If you have more than one website, you should opt for higher rates.
Once you have made your choice, you will be directed to a page where you will be asked to choose a domain name. You can choose a new domain name or use an existing site.
You also have the option to create a domain name at a later date if you need more time to think about it. Check for typos.
If you choose the option New domain name , you will have the choice between the extensions .com, .org. .net and many others. The most common is .com, and that’s what I recommend. The next step takes you to a page where you can enter your personal details. After you fill them out, scroll down to the page that asks you to select your plan and indicate if you need additional services.
Package information you can select these optional services. Choose an account plan to get started. The longer the contract, the better it is for you, but remember that you’re just starting out and there’s nothing wrong with sticking with simple, cheaper options for now. You can always update it later when you start making money. As you can see, domain registration is free. Such as SSL encryption. This feature is a free SSL certificate that makes your website secure and http://. What is an SSL certificate? An SSL Certificate protects your customers’ sensitive information – passwords, user names and credit card numbers – from falling into the wrong hands. Customers can tell if your site is secure by seeing a lock icon in their browser. The next feature, Domain Privacy Protection, is an add-on that I highly recommend. This prevents marketing agencies from accessing your private information. In turn, it displays the Bluehost information for the site instead of yours. Then we have Codeguard Basic, , which makes daily backups and allows you to revert to a previous backup in case something untoward happens. You can leave this choice as there are many free quality options for this service. ‘Bluehost SEO Tools start’ is another service that you can refuse from the start because there are free alternatives. However, I cannot stress enough how important SEO is for your website, especially if you are just starting out. So I recommend that you choose this option first. What is SEO? Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of optimizing your online content so that a search engine (Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc.) will preferentially display it as the best result when searching for a specific keyword. For more information on how to make SEO work for you, visit this website. It helped me a lot. Then we have Single Domain SSL. It gives your website its own IP address. This is an Internet address that is assigned to a single hosting account, rather than sharing your IP address with dozens of other people. I recommend this option at Bluehost, especially if you want to sell online. 1 Microsoft 365 mailbox is a feature that provides an email account with @ for your website. For example, if your website is MySuperCoolSportsBlog.com and your name is Jeff, your specific email address could be [email protected]. This may sound more professional and make customers take you more seriously, but it is obviously a personal choice. Finally, on our list, Sitelock Security- Essential secures your WordPress website and protects it from hackers and malware. I would not choose this program because there are many free alternatives. The next step is to enter your credit card information to pay. After a successful purchase you will be asked to choose a password for your account.
After you confirm your password by email, you will be redirected to a page where you must choose a theme for your website.
You can choose one of the free themes offered at this stage, or skip this step and tackle it later. Then a pop-up window appears with ALL DONE and START BUILDING. You will then be redirected to the WordPress dashboard, where you will be asked a few questions to help you create your site.

- Plug-ins you can install plug-ins on your website. A cool page builder plugin you could try is Elementor. It also has paid and free features that you can explore. Yoast is a free SEO plugin that makes your articles SEO ready!
3. Layout development
As mentioned above, there are many free options to make your blog look good from the start. If you’re looking for something out of the ordinary, check out ThemeForest, where you’ll find premium themes that you can customize to your liking. ‘ Narrow your search to sports blog ideas or sports blog tips and you’ll get a pretty wide selection.
When you’re done, click the house icon in the upper left corner to see your page. To connect to your WordPress control panel, use CPanel Bluehost or enter your domain name and then /wp-admin. So it is mysupercoolsportsblog.com/wp-admin , to get to the login page.
4. Content, content and more content!
This is the most important step in creating a sports blog. Long before you start your blog, you should have an outline of at least half a dozen articles. Well, frankly, it’s better to have it written and ready to go. Successful (and sustainable) blogs start with healthy content that convinces readers that you are a skilled blogger. At this point, you should have already decided on the name of your blog, as well as the basic layout and design. When you publish your articles, they should contain these elements: According to them, if eight out of ten people can read your headline while scrolling, only two out of ten will click to read your message. It doesn’t matter how good your content is; if the title isn’t good, no one will click on it! Looking for inspiration? Flip through some magazines or gossip columns in the newspaper. Finding catchy names is their bread and butter. How-to posts work very well. For example: How do you start a sports blog? (Fingers crossed!) The numbered titles are also a crowd pleaser. This way, you increase the credibility of your post from reputable sources. Not only does she look good, but she seems to be an expert on the subject, citing her sources, etc. Best advice The best sports blogs are happy to receive backlinks. This increases traffic to their site. You must go to them. Ask them if they would like to share tips on sports blogging. Send them an email touting their content and give them a link to your article so they can check it out. If you’re lucky, they may even share it with you! An important element of any blog post. Add photos you’ve found on free stock photo sites, or your own. Don’t forget to mention the source or the photographer. Your pins and should be at home. It should give the reader that saturated feeling that all sports fans are looking for. Studies have shown that most readers click on the title, read the introduction and scroll down to the conclusion. If they like the dessert, go back to the main course. Finally, run your message through the free program grammar . Grammarly is my main plugin! Everyone makes mistakes, even the best of us. Don’t make a fool of yourself. Use Grammarly! I really should be paid for this! Last sign Always try to end your message with a question. Ask the reader what they think or agree with your opinion. This encourages them to comment, and if you respond (and you should!), you’ll have someone ready to come back and read your next article!
5. Make money from your blog
This becomes relevant when you are starting out and already have a steady stream of readers. This is probably the first thing you’ll have to deal with after publishing your first articles. How I monetized my Instagram with less than 1,000 followers The major sports blogs have membership programs that offer exclusive ad-free content and offers to their readers who pay a small monthly fee. Online platforms like Patreon host many well-known sports blogs and help manage their members’ accounts. It gives you the tools you need to connect directly with your readers and grow your fan base.
Supplement
